Friday, Nov 1 (8 am-4 pm) Nonprofit Hub Marketing Bootcamp (Nonprofit Hub)
Join us for the Nonprofit Hub Marketing Bootcamp! This collaboration model is designed to take away the guesswork, the avoidance, the imposter syndrome, and the uncertainty that prevent new and small organizations from investing in marketing. Either way, we’re missing out on an opportunity to make our organizations more sustainable. Create a full-fledged marketing plan for your organization! Marketing activist and speaker Lindsay LaShell takes you step-by-step in your journey to get smart, strategic marketing into your organization. You’ll leave with the following: A digital marketing plan that is easy to share with collaborators and supervisors; Three-month content plan so you know exactly what your next steps are; Clarity on what channels are required and which are not to simplify your workload. Freedom Walk: New Programming to Celebrate Our Freedom to Read (ProgrammingLibrarian)
In this free 60-minute webinar, participants will hear from staff at Tom C. Clark High School (TX), winner of ALA’s 2024 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Programming, as they discuss their winning program and share tips for school library professionals interested in developing a similar program. In the face of legislative threats and scrutiny against public school libraries and access to resources, Clark High School’s winning program centered on the freedom to read and engaged the community to understand the fundamental rights of students to access a diverse range of information and literature in their school library. In 2023, Clark High School librarian, Lucy Podmore, redesigned the school’s traditional observance of Banned Books Week into a Freedom to Read Week, introducing the Freedom Walk, an all-encompassing event for students. Collaborating with social studies teachers to align with curriculum, the Freedom Walk occurred during student lunch periods and comprised of five stations centered around various censorship issues. The interactive stations gave nearly 500 students the opportunity to reflect and learn about their own experiences with censorship through games and introspective prompts. By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to: Identify elements of the censorship issues that could be used as the foundation of your Freedom Walk; Customize portions of the Freedom Walk to fit your community’s needs.

Open Affiliation Metadata: How Recent Innovations Help Libraries and Librarians (ACRL Choice 360)
Analyzing an institution’s research outputs helps research libraries align their collections strategies with community needs, estimate their previous and future spends on article processing charges (APCs), understand the impact of transformative agreements, and much more. Yet this analysis has remained difficult because researcher institution affiliation metadata is often captured in publications as unstandardized plain text, while both affiliation identifiers and databases that link publications to institutions have often been proprietary. In this webinar, we will go over recent innovations in open research metadata that are disrupting this model and explain what librarians can do both to get the data they need and to improve their own institution’s data in downstream research intelligence tools.

Creating Maawn Doobiigeng: Developing A New Classification System for a Tribal Library (NNLM)
Existing organizational systems including Dewey Decimal System and Library of Congress Classification are inherently damaging to Indigenous people and are insufficient for accurately describing and providing access to Native topics. From 2019 to 2024, the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Libraries worked with community members to create a new classification system, Maawn Doobiigeng (Gather Together). A member of the workgroup and the Tribal Librarian will share about the process of creating this new system, how it is being implemented, and how it is being used in the libraries, particularly in terms of health-related resources. This webinar focuses on increasing health equity through information and aligns with NNLM’s area of interest to address the needs of minority and underserved populations.

The Geopolitics of the Internet and Its Implications for the Governance of AI (Proquest)
Join us for the 2024 Annual Register Edmund Burke Lecture featuring Dame Wendy Hall, Director of the Web Science Institute at the University of Southampton and co-author of Four Internets: Data, Geopolitics, and the Governance of Cyberspace. In 2023, Dame Wendy was appointed to the UN’s high-level advisory body on artificial intelligence, which released its report, “Governing AI for Humanity,” in September 2024. There is no doubt that the world is very dependent on the Internet these days. If it wasn’t obvious before, we certainly realized our dependency during the Covid-19 pandemic. In this talk we will explore the future of the Internet through the perspective of geopolitics and data governance. We will argue that through this lens we see at least four internets, maybe more, rather than just one interconnected ecosystem. We will explore what aspects of the governance of cyberspace we must protect the most in order for us to continue to use the technical infrastructure of the Internet that we all rely on to support cloud and data services, and how this is all playing out in the age of AI. Additionally, the lecture will address the crucial topic of research integrity in the age of AI, exploring how academia can adapt to ensure ethical and responsible use of these powerful technologies.

Leading from Within: Cultivating Managerial Self-Care for Resilient Organizations (LibrariesLearn)
Mid-level library managers are often caught between the upper management’s expectations and the frontline staff’s needs. Balancing budgets, meeting deadlines, and handling personnel issues can lead to high levels of stress, which can take a toll on their mental health. The focus on employee well-being often takes a backseat to operational needs. When managers prioritize operational needs over employee well-being, it can contribute to a toxic workplace culture. However, prioritizing mental health is crucial not only for the individual manager’s success but also for fostering a healthy workplace culture. In many cases, there’s a lack of support for mid-level managers in terms of mental health resources and training. They may feel isolated in their roles, without peers or supervisors who understand the unique challenges they face. This discussion panel will explore the unique challenges faced by mid-level library managers in maintaining their own mental health while also supporting the well-being of their team members.
