Art Exploration Kits

Capture your patrons' art curiosity with these traveling pop up exhibits!

We recently added five brand new kits to the CSL Kits Collection, a Colorado State Library program that is made possible through grant funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The Art Exploration Kits contain art supplies, replica artifacts, and creative prompts to inspire your patrons’ learning, art curiosity, and powers of observation. Each kit offers the opportunity to engage with a range of unique books, activities, and reproductions of well-known and lesser-known artworks in a loose theme. The kits cover:

The contents can be displayed as a sort of small pop up exhibit in a space that allows patrons to explore at their leisure. Or, library staff can use some or all of the materials as a basis of a focused program with a group. All reproductions are based on artworks that are in the public domain and as such can be publicly displayed without permission.

Audience

The philosophy behind the series is that art is for everyone, no matter our age or background. Therefore the kits are not aimed at any one particular group or audience, as almost everyone will find something to interest them if they spend a little time. With that said, libraries should be mindful when using the kit as the materials/guidance may relate to or raise mature, difficult, or controversial themes. Younger audiences will benefit from a knowledgeable guide who is prepared to navigate some of the more challenging aspects.

Contents

Each kit comes with a standard set of art supplies and activity materials designed to challenge your patrons to observe with intention and mindfulness, plus reproductions and books relevant to the title theme. For full list of each kit’s contents, refer to the CSL Kits site.

Availability

All five kits are available for 8-week loans to libraries participating in the program. If your library is not yet signed up, enrolling is easy. Ready to place a hold? Find the kits in the catalog!
